Corinthian cup every Two Years ?
Just wanted to start a topic with the teams currently in the league which I am thinking of asked at the next AGM. What do you think about playing the Corinthian Cup competition every two seasons? Personally I don't think any team outside the Premier and Senior Leagues have a chance to win it so why not make it once a season and only invite teams from these divisions instead, so its a "top-end" cup. This will also free some fixtures up. Also some teams drop out one season and this affects the future rounds. We can then introduce a "bottom-end" cup for divisions one and two. So then every club will have THREE competitions to play for every season. Their respective leagues and divisional cups and also the Corinthian or "new Cup" competition based on whatever league they are in. Im also willing to help Stan with the fixtures so he can do the top two divisions and relevant cups and I can do the bottom two divisions and relevant cups. Comments gentlemen. Runo Esprit FC |

Im sure the league have mentioned something similar to this already at a past meeting but never the less I think your idea of having the Corinthian Cup every season and revamped for the top two divisions only is a good one. Like you mentioned a second new cup could be introduced for the bottom two divisions. Most if not all other Sunday Football leagues have more than the one domestic cup available for every team in its set up, some have three!! sounds good!!!!! |

As part of the committee, it is something I have been concerned with for some time. I personally do not like a competition that spans more than one season, for many reasons. However the other thing to consider is cost. Your suggestion of creating another cup has two downfalls. It leads to the Corinthian Cup taking place each year, plus yet another cup. Each cup final costs about £250 for the ground and around £450 for trophies, not to forget a one-off fee for the new cup itself. This gives an annual fee of £700. Taking two divisions of 12 teams to compete in a cup would cost about £30 a team to enter and I don't think many would agree to it. My suggestion for the Corinthian Cup is a bit different. Limit it to 16 teams, played over one season. Invite all division winners/runners-up and cup winners/runners-up from the previous season. This would be a maximum of 16 teams, but is unlikely to be that many, as some will fall into more than one category and some may not wish to enter. The remaining places would be decided by drawing names from a hat at the September meeting up to a maximum of 16 teams. Entry fee would still apply for the cup, as usual. This suggestion still costs the league slightly, as the cup is now played every season, but with fees also coming in every year the cost would be reduced to about £300 per year. |

I think there is definately some scope to improve the cup competitions, mainly focused towards the Corinthian Cup. Obviously, cost is going to be a determining factor but one thing which this league has going for it is that it does attract good crowds for the finals, something my own league (who operate midweek finals) does not get. There definately needs to be an additional cup for the lower divisions to participate in as the Corinthian Cup is generally dominated by the top sides and only provides one game every other season for sides from the lower divisions. Just to put things into perspective, as a Saturday club we participate in the following competitions: League All-Divisions Cup "Junior" Cup for bottom two divisions Essex County Cup charity cup 1 charity cup 2 There is a definate lack of charity cups for teams to enter on sundays. why is this? Maybe this is another avenue to look into? |

Some Interesting ideas and pleased that the topic is well underway now. Im glad Peter on the committee agrees with the Corinthian Cup being played over a single season. In the last Corinthian Cup which is still underway 27 teams entered and limiting it to 16 makes sense but it will be difficult to choose which teams can enter and making this fair to all the clubs. What if the top two divisions has no choice but to enter, and also introducing a "charity cup" for the bottom two divisions shouldn't be too hard, again making it compulsory. the league will make more money in the long run this way. Recently the Division Three Cup has been scrapped so the costs saved here could be spent on a new cup. Admittingly I don't know the full financial situation of the league at the present moment, but maybe I could get a sponsor for a new cup if the league agrees to having another competition. Also at the last meeting in April there was a major argument that some teams enter 3 or 4 external cups as they aren't enough in this league and also the more successful teams don't complete their fixtures. I think this could also settle this arguement and we could cap the external competitions to 1 or a max of 2. Also every year the finals will be on 3 days with no teams overlapping in the finals. Day 1: Premier and One Day 2: Senior and Two Day 3: Corinthian Cup and "Charity Cup" I think if the costs are controlled it can be done if enough people back it and the league has the fiancial backing. Over to you guys. Runo |

In our Saturday league, there is a cap on external competitions which is 2. This is usually used by entering the county cup and a charity cup. Any other external competitions can only be played midweek. |

Thanks Gents, The notion was passed at the AGM and the Corinthian Cup will now indeed be played every season for the top two divisions and a new Trophy called the Trophyland Cup will be for the bottom two divisions. Thanks again, you see what can happen if we stick together. Runo |
