Just a idea

If you wanted to slim down the league to 8 teams in each division could you not recreate division 3 from the past. I know some teams may not like the fact that they will be drop a division without being relegated but it may solve a pronlem. (please look below)

You have 40 teams at the moment so that would cover 8 teams per league for 5 league.

Looking at it that way if you was to have 25 ref's you could assign 5 ref to each division. You would only need 4 ref for each division each week so if one was called away to ref for the essex fa the division has a spare. Knowing how good some of the teams are in this league means that the weeks the Essex FA needs our refs most of the escfl teams would be in a essex fa cup meaning losing a ref for a division would not be so bad. (i hope that makes sense)

Or is it just a bad idea that i should have keep to myself.

Re: Just a idea

Tony,

Sorry to rain on your parade, but the number of divisions doesn't affect how many referees you need each week. 40 teams means a potential 20 refs needed. The only thing bringing back division three would do is cut down the number of games each team plays in a season, i.e., instead of 20 league games for a 11 team division to 14 league games for an eight team division.

Many clubs have paid in advance for 22-24 pitches from councils and are unhappy if they only get 14 league games, especially if they fail in cup competitions. It really is a fine line keeping everyone happy with the way the league is run. Experience shows that an ideal division is between 10 and 12 teams, with clubs playing double-headers if they succeed in cups or due to poor weather.

The one big advantage of double-headers is that a referee can cover two games in one week.

The real problem is that not every referee is available every week. Some referee on other leagues on some weeks and some only referee for one or two weeks each month. Therefore some weeks Frank Marsh, our referees’ secretary, has only 6 or 7 refs available, so only 12 to 14 team would get referee coverage.
