Organization seeks to raise $1 billion to "change future of blacks world-wide"?

BY NIKKI BURNS

On April 7, 2001, Stephen Roach, a white Cincinnatti police officer, fatally shot 19-year-old Timothy Thomas, an unarmed black man.

The incident sparked widespread economic boycotts and the city’s worst racial unrest in three decades (since the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 196 .

It also prompted Michael R. Moore to start Blacks United four months later. Blacks United is a non-profit organization that seeks to unite black people economically on a national scale. Currently, Blacks United has members in 27 cities located in 11 states. Its goal is to have full representation in all 50 states and every major city. The organization is also trying to raise $1 billion “to change the future of black America.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, between 1993 and 2000, blacks experienced a 31.8 percent increase in their real per capita income, which rose to $15,197, up from $11,534 in 1993. Blacks United said African-Americans control more than $600 billion per year and “it is time we use a portion of what we already have … to build the future we want.”

In an effort to raise its $1 billion campaign goal, the organization is currently trying to capitalized on the dollars in the African-American community by: conducting a national fundraiser, building hundreds of state-of-the-art businesses and learning centers nationwide to strengthen black communities, supporting existing non profit and church organizations and organizing black-owned businesses to compete nationally with the common goal of creating new jobs for African-Americans. All donations are tax exempt.

Approximately 100,000 volunteers are needed to pull off the massive initiative.

WE intend to PAY ALL members BACK for supporting this Organization by SENIORITY. ALL registered members should at least contribute $12.00 per year of which $6.00 will be divide amoung 6 other members in your upline to cover printing, postage, membership, and PAYBACK (also, $27.00 per year for one UBW/BU T-shirt which will go towards an investment in our T-shirt printing business). 50% of ALL contributions larger than $12.00 per year will be divided with six of YOUR upline members.

“Our next step is to develop a detailed plan that will specifically address what type of facilities/programs will be built in what cities,” according to information posted on the Blacks United web site. “In general, state-of-the-art business and learning centers will be the focus. This detailed plan will be sent to all supporters for review prior to the fundraising campaign.

“Our goal is not to compete or duplicate [the efforts of black organizations such as the NAACP and the Urban League], but to work to make all of our organizations more efficient and more accountable to the people they are trying to help. Blacks United has a different role to play by providing a source of funding and grants for churches and non-profit organizations.”

The grants will allow the organizations to be less dependent on other sources of funding and be more dependent on “black dollars.”

Edward Owens of Houston said blacks have focused on everything from family to education, but never have taken a serious look at economics.

“For too long, we have focused on everything except economics. Economics drives everything in America. Thank God somebody has awakened to understand the key to survival, which is investing in black America,” said Owens.
