Vermilion County IL Investigates Animal Cruelty Claims at County Shelter

From news report about Vermilion County IL Shelter using the barbaric Heart Stick method of killing:

Allegations of Animal Cruelty
Reported by: Sarah Jindra / WCIA 3 NEWS, Champaign IL

Monday, Aug 13, 2007 @10:32pm CST

There are accusations animals are being treated inhumanely at the Vermilion County Animal Shelter. Those claims come from people who have worked inside the building. The shelters foundation met Monday and asked the county to launch an investigation into the matter.

A former employee and two current employees went to the foundation with their concerns. They say animals are being euthanized improperly, and say there's other cruelty too, like putting cats in plastic bags while their hearts are still beating. They're strong claims that have many people upset.

Animal lovers like Jamie Ray, hope the allegations aren't true. She says it kills her to hear the stories of abuse. But she, and others, say they've heard enough to make them think otherwise.

The foundation is asking the county to investigate the claims of animal cruelty, improper euthanization, and even to take a look at the finances at the shelter.

Jim McMahon, County Board Chair, says this will be a serious issue. "The foundation brought up some very serious accusations and we'll investigate them like we would anybody else," says McMahon.

It's a serious issue brought to the forefront at Monday night's heated foundation meeting. Acting director, Pete Smith, was put on the spot.

"This administration here has done nothing but undermine this foundation," spoke former shelter director, Jerry Hawker, as he addressed the foundation board.

Smith says there is no truth to the allegations. "I think a lot of times people are saying this and carry it overboard. They exaggerate. If there's an issue with an employee being cruel, we'll take care of it," says Smith.

Now the county will make sure that's the case, and the foundation will continue pushing for answers. The foundation board chair, Diana Bryant, says animals deserve to be treated with humanity even though they may not leave the shelter.

Still some worry, the county's investigation won't be enough. Ray says citizens will have to use their voice and be the voice for the animals. She thinks leaders will drag their feet.

The county board chair says he plans to meet with Smith and the county vet soon. He says this issue is on his top ten list of priorities.
