Can someone clarify rules re: walking my dog through an Arlington park?
A strange thing just happened--I was walking my dog on one of Walter Reed Rec. Center's paths, as I do daily. This particular path runs alongside the playground. My dog stopped to pee on the grass, and a parks and rec employee told me that it was against the rules to be anywhere near the playground with my dog (who was on a leash). I apologized and continued walking, but am left confused. Can anyone confirm that his statement is correct (or incorrect)? It just doesn't make much sense to me. I've sent an email to Parks and Rec, but it was a general email add. and I'm not sure how soon I'll hear back. Thanks!

There's a sign posted at one entrance to the park (on W Reed Dr - the Col Pike side) that says No Dogs. So I guess that's the rule in sum. Though I frequently take my dog there, and there are often dogs playing in the field near the tennis courts. Maybe best just to play it safe and stay on the 16th Street side of the park. |

Hi Carolyn, Thanks for your reply. You're right about the sign. And there is (was?) another sign that said "all dogs on leash". I actually wrote the county parks dept. to see if they'd give me the low down and someone wrote back a very polite note--he said they didn't want dogs right by the playground because some dogs are aggressive and unpredictable (which is true) and they don't want kids being exposed to dog urine (which I find a bit ridiculous . . . as my coworker said, "What's the kid gonna do, lick the bottom of his shoe?") The letter also said they'd soon post signs around the playground. Thanks again, Jane |
