Hi Shelly, yes things have certainly changed. I 1st went to Turkey 20 years ago and we were treated more as "novelties" with people taking us inside their houses etc. Mind you Im only talking about the main resorts, not generalising about the rest of the Country. There were no Macdonalds BK's etc. and everything was really cheap. It hasn't taken them long to fall into the "Tourist Trap Malaise".
Rip offs all over. Im pleased my experiences in TG stood me in good stead as I was able to deal with it a lot easier.
Thats one of the issues that TG will face if it wants to move into 21st century tourism. I remember a good few years ago in Goa being warned not to tip the hotel staff as they were earning more than Doctors, and other professionals out in the villages. it changed everyones ambitions. All the boys wanted to be Hotel Waiters!
Personally, I think a lot of the problems in TG is caused through Hotel owners (non Gambians), who are aware of Med prices thinking they can charge the same, but not passing any revenue back to the workers.
I can see a mini marxist type union revolution starting up in the future!
There are lots of ways forward.... I don't know if it will happen with the current world politics and the increase in fundamental Islam.....time will tell. Its a lovely moderate country but I fear for its future! |
