Hi Bill your post made me smile.
Ahhhhhhhhh memories of how things were I remember it well.
The novelty thing is a kind of attraction to a lot of us returning to Gambia I love the sensational greeting we get from the villagers on our return I think theyre as excited as us and I deffinatly get more out of the experience than I give im sure.
I hope and pray that the dreaded BK and MaccyDs never reaches TG
The Goa comments a valid one I know up country theres big prolems attracting teachers to the schools and the same mentality ie waiters comment seems to be an additional factor.
I was suprised by the hotel I must admit ( My first experience/ non Gambian owners) the menus consisted of chips with everything and burgers were the number 1 sellers it would seem but maybe thats more to do wth consumer demand I dont know. Pricing was on par with the UK in some cases higher even.
The political climate there along with the ever increasing claims (hiv cures; fertility cures the discovery of a mass of iron orr etc etc), the corruption (latest being 4 gamtel execs sacked after their 4 million d a month wages, the GIA losses) has impacted the securing of finanial assistance for a lot of instiutions that depend on this to work and support projects in Gambia.
Like you, I to fear for the beautiful country's future. xx |
