Re: what is the downside

Big downside - - - - - - your weight! All the good food here goes right to your hips, thighs, guts, etc.

Oh you hit the mark Crawfish! I have been back for 2 wks and already I've gained a few extra pounds. My husband too. The food here is so good, you just can't get it anywhere else in the world. I heard a joke once that New Orleanians love fried food so much that if they could they would fry water! Yes the food is good and everyone puts on a few extra pounds but at least you never run out of ideas on where to eat out

You better like warm weather. If you are a fan of cold and snow you'll be disappointed or unhappy. Avg. summer temp is in the 90s. Avg. winter temp is mis 50s. There are hotter places in the U.S., such as Arizona, Vegas, NMexico, parts of CA, but they don't have the humidity that New Orleans does. The plus side is that your body does acclimate and after a year or two of living here you hardly notice the heat. You know its hot, but somehow you just don't complain. Why bother? Who would you complain to? Mother Nature? LMAOROTFL

Of course, for some people, living in warm weather is a plus. For me, I don't like cold weather, nor snow, nor biting wind chill factors. Being able to wear a short sleeve shirt in December on occasion (no kidding) is definitely a plus for me.

Also, the heat and humidity hear is no worse than say Houston, Memphis, Atlanta, St. Louis, or Kansas City for that matter. The difference being that while most of the country is in the deep freeze using their heaters, we are still enjoying mild conditions...

Re: what is the downside

Downside? What's that? Great food, good music, beautiful architecture, warm climate, rich history, friendly people, what more could you want? Ok, there are a few downsides to living here. As Crawfish and Maureen pointed out, watch your weight. Not easy being a vegetarian or on a diet in this town The public schools in Orleans Parish are in bad shape, with only a handful being "acceptable" to "good". The upside to that is private schools are plenty, and most won't cost you an arm and a leg. Another downside, car thefts. Car thefts here are pretty bad. An upside - easy to disuade a would-be car theft by two simple steps 1) install an alarm with ignition kill and/or install "the club"; 2) don't leave anything out in view either in the seats, or if you have a hatchback, the storage area. Another downside - potholes. But with the new Mayor at the helm, I'm guessing this won't be an issue for much longer

Re: Re: what is the downside

I love New Orleans, but let's be real -- there are many downsides to living here. There is massive, crushing, abject poverty. There is a lot of crime, including a lot of murders. Lately the police have been cracking down on marijuana smokers, who usually don't hurt anyone. The city is notorious for corruption; Mr. Nagin's very public campaign against corruption may be the real thing or it may be just for show -- time will tell. The city itself is sinking rapidly. It's vulnerable to big damage from a hurricane. And southern Louisiana is losing coastline at a truly alarming rate.

To my mind these are the biggest problems, but the positives still outweigh the negatives for me.
