Above/below Canal

Hi Emily,

I was just looking through apartment listings and was wondering if you could explain the difference between above and below Canal to me. I am wondering which neighborhoods these are, what types of people are there, etc. I don't want to waste a lot of time going through all the listings if I don't have to! Thanks.

Re: Above/below Canal

Whew! Where to start.?.. The terms Above Canal and Below Canal refer to areas of many different neighborhoods. Areas to the northeast of Canal St. are referred to as Below Canal. Areas to the southwest of Canal St. are referred to as Above Canal.

Give us a few details on the type of neighborhood you're looking for...do you need schools nearby for your kids? Are you single? Bohemian? Suburban? Apartment complexes? Private homes? Need public transportation? The list goes on.

In any case, here's a good site to let you know what some of the neighborhoods are like.

And another paper to give you listings of apartments by neighborhood:

Best of luck!

Re: Re: Above/below Canal

I was thinking of moving to the Faubourg Marigny area, so now I know to look Below Canal. Thanks so much for your help! I am coming down in April to get a better idea on where I want to live, I can't wait! I'm single and want to move into a neighborhood that attracts young, single artist types. Any other suggestions?

How about Bywater? Right next to Fauberg Marigny and in most instances, a bit more affordable. Very bohemian too. Be sure to click onto Neighborhood Snapshot when you visit this site.

Re: Above/below Canal

Hi Jen!

Some of the neighborhoods that are "above" Canal are:

the Garden District

the Irish Channel

the Lower Garden District

Uptown

the Warehouse District

Some of the neighborhoods that are "below" Canal are:

Bywater

Faubourg Marigny

For more info. on each of these areas, go to my "neighborhoods" page and see a brief description of each, their location, and the average housing costs.

Hope this helps!!! Let me know if I can help with anything else

Em
