DCI BROADCAST COMMENTATORS!

Some posts recently added interesting comments about the "quality" of the DCI broadcast commentators! Here is one:

If you want to see hosts that are hilarious, watch 76 or 77 with Gene Rayburn ("The Match Game") and his wife - just awful!

Re: DCI BROADCAST COMMENTATORS!

Here is an other (from Jerry Davidson)

Watching Curt Gowdy and Rondo is a hoot.

Re: DCI BROADCAST COMMENTATORS!

Dave,
I agree with that comment. DCI was just looking for a "face" to be on their production. Too bad it was a game show host.

Gowdy wasn't near as bad as Rayburn in my opinion. At least he was professional enough to try to figure out what he was watching and how everything worked in the activity.

Re: DCI BROADCAST COMMENTATORS!

LOL, that was fast Dave!

I did qualify that Gowdy was better than Rayburn though. It was always a hoot listening to all of the color commentators with the exception of Rondo. At least he seemed to know where to stop before going over the top. Speeking of and "over the top" DCI slappy. Michael Cesario tried way too hard to make the storylines compelling, to the point of adnauseum. You could always tell which corps he was working with by how they were introduced.

Re: DCI BROADCAST COMMENTATORS!

I believe that they had Chuck Mangione in Montreal one year and I think they might have had Stan Kenton a couple of years before he passed away. I'm not sure about Kenton but do recollect him mixed up with a Blue Devils/Santa Clara program at the Concord Pavillion. I am probably wrong but for some reason I seem to think that Doc Severensen might have been involved in some of their broadcasts in the late 70s.

The absolute worst have been Don Angelica, the Professor from Indiana University and that guy Cesario. All three came off as effete snobs.

Re: DCI BROADCAST COMMENTATORS!

The first year, 1975, they had Tim Moxley (former SCV Drum Major) and some news guy from the East (terrible). Then Gene Rayburn and his wife took over in 76-77, with Peter Emmons (SCV drill writer, who did his best to tolerate the Rayburns). Emmons continued for another year or two after that, before "Reliable Rondo" took over. Jim Peck, another game show host, was on for a couple years and wasn't too bad. Guest "stars" included Maynard Ferguson (79 I think), Rita Moreno (80), Chuck Mangione (81).

And you're all right - Caeario was AWFUL!
