EXPANDED CORPS EXHIBIT AT NP HISTORICAL SOCIETY

NPHS CORPS EXHIBIT PROJECT TABLED
2-22-09

In April, 2004, we established a Corps exhibit at the Norwood Park Historical Society (NPHS). The exhibit was dedicated in a ceremony at the NPHS site, supported by a performance by the Royal Airs Alumni Corps.

The exhibit is a small collection of Corps memorabilia and a history book.
However, this exhibit is NOT on permanent public display, but is archived in a storage room. It is available for viewing only on request.

We have been asking the Board of the Historical Society to change this:

1. Add to the exhibit materials .. we have a drum and a bugle, some
additional pictures as well. We would also add a US flag.

2. We would like the expanded corps exhibit to be put on PERMANENT,
PUBLIC display at the Society site. Perhaps a small corner exhibit, on a
table, with pictures on the wall.

But, in spite of repeated telephone and written contacts by Team member Wayne Mounsey, the NPHS staff and Board have not been receptive to this so far. We need alumni help to make this happen!

We had hoped to set up a team of Corps alumni from the area (led by Norwood Park residents) …especially any with INFLUENCE with the NPHS Board … to handle this. Personal, face-to-face contact with the NPHS
Board by local and influential alumni might get some interest. We have contacted a number of our alumni who live in the Norwood Park area, but have received no offers of help.

As a result, we have tabled this project until we are able to get help to work with the Historical Society Board.

Re: EXPANDED CORPS EXHIBIT AT NP HISTORICAL SOCIETY

A suggestion for you Dave......

A number of corps alumni went on to serve in the armed services-WWII, Korea and VietNam. Additional alums became prominent in the law enforcement community and alot of those involved utilized their training in drum corps as a plus on their resumes. After serving our country and wearing badges a number of these folks went on to be Post Commanders, organizing events for the youth of America :o) plus stimulating the local economy.

I believe a diverse approach to the NPHS might wake them up to the fact we were more than a bunch of kids with drums and bugles.

No, it doesn't include the teachers, professionals and influence the corps had on the 'next' generation. 'They' might pay attention to that approach. FWIW......

As a chuckle.....you might ask them why they renovated a huge swimming pool just north of the field house and replaced it with a dinky 'new' pool in the early 60's.

I agree.....time to go-good luck.

Ralph, I agree with you. The Historical Society just isn't listening.

But, The Historical Society really has nothing to do with the Park District.
They are a separate volunteer organization in Norwood Park.
