1973 VFW NATIONALS, NEW ORLEANS

A brief note. By this time, most corps were avoiding the AL and VFW shows and going to DCI instead.

1. Pembroke Imperials, MA 84.15
2. Black Knights, IL 81.00

Re: 1973 VFW NATIONALS, NEW ORLEANS

A MILLION stories about this trip...but it's too early in the morning.

We had won State Fair right before this trip, the only time we beat the Guardsmen all year. Pembrooke beating Belleville was an absolute joke, as the Black Knights had been 10th at DCI the previous week - I always thought it was a slap at DCI for stealing drum corps away from the veterans. I doubt the Belleville people were even upset, because it was so obvious.

And it was hotter than hell the entire week!

Re: 1973 VFW NATIONALS, NEW ORLEANS

Dave,

Not sure where that repertoire came from, but it's not quite right. In fact, it's kind of a combination of the two very different shows we did that. We started the year with New World Symphony, but dumped it partway through. We eventually opened with the theme from Bill Chase's "The River", which featured the soprano soloist in the back stands. That went into "Goodbye Columbus", which was from an Ali McGraw movie that nobody ever saw. We then did "Requiem" and the Naval Hymn, which included a coffin made from two flag poles and a flag. The rest of it is correct - 2001, MacArthur Park, Jesus Christ Superstar, and John Brown's Body.

It was an interesting show, and pretty contemporary for its time.

Re: 1973 VFW NATIONALS, NEW ORLEANS

I remember it being very hot and sticky, getting fried by the sun and management making us go to the store to buy what they called "lids" come to find out the joke was on us they meant hats with brims. Does anyone have a copy of this show?
