Midwest area corps alumni reunion 2011

From the planning team for this event:

HOLD THE DATE…AND PLAN YOUR TRIP TO CHICAGO FOR THE 2nd Annual midwest Drum corps ALUMNI picnic ... ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2011.

Our First Annual Chicago Area Drum Corps Alumni Picnic was such a huge success, that the e-mails/letters/calls are still coming in requesting that we put one together again this year. The majority of requests preferred after Labor Day. Therefore, a deposit was placed on the picnic grove for September 10, 2011.

As last year, this distribution is going out to various drum corps alumni. (Royal Airs, Imperials, Cavaliers, Vanguards, Viscounts, Madison Scouts, Kilties, Chi-Angels/Cougars/Spartans, Giles Yellow Jackets, Nisei, Grenadiers, Lamont Scouts, Queensmen, Vaqueros, Raiders and Mariners.

Please mark your calendars and plan on attending. The location is the same as last year, with the same pavilion, and amenities (modern indoor bathroom facilities, many electrical outlets, BBQ grills and a fireplace).

As last year, there will be no fee to anyone for the picnic. This will be a family-style picnic…bring your own food and drinks (liquor…in plastic or aluminum containers…IS allowed on the premises). Children, grandchildren, etc. will be welcome. We hope that we will also have entertainment again.

Reminders will be forthcoming with further details.

IMPERIALS DISPLAY AT MIDWEST CORPS ALUMNI PICNIC

The Midwest corps alumni committee is planning to hold the 2nd annual alumni picnic in September (Sept. 10). Imperials alumna Christine Craddock (Soprano 1977-1980) has volunteered to build a small display of Imperials items for that event.

Christine has some music, a poster, an old corps jacket, some old schedules, etc. and a short video of the Imperials from the late 70s. (The picnic site has power so music and videos are good.)

Some alumni have offered pictures and videos for such use in the past. If you can offer pictures, memorabilia, videos or anything of interest, give Christine a shout. (It would also be good to have some of the corps flags for display.) E-mail her at: crssyc@earthlink.net

Let's plan to have a nice display of our corps history!

(1st Pavilion upon entering…on right) – LARGE PAVILION

Picnic tables and benches are provided at the grove…however, you are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets (and a pop-up canopy if you wish).

This will be a family-style picnic…bring your own food and drinks (liquor…IS allowed on the premises). All liquids must be in plastic or aluminum containers…no glass please. If you would like to barbecue, grills are provided at the pavilion, but you will need to bring your own charcoal.

Children, grandchildren, etc. are welcome. This year, there will definitely be organized games with prizes for kids. We will provide any music (boombox). Currently, performance commitments are the Royal Airs Reunion Corps and the Classic Cavaliers.

Some notes:

1. There will be a sign-in table at the entrance …. be sure to sign in & get a name tag.

2. Bring the kids and grand-kids. They will enjoy the day, including the games, activities (AND PRIZES). Jolyne Hayes (McHenry Viscounts) has agreed to assist with the children’s games and we are seeking additional help. Give Adriane a shout if you can help.

3. The schedule has not quite been etched in stone just yet. We are waiting for a response from another drum corps that may be performing, and should know by sometime next week. Once we receive that response, I can put together a schedule that will include all performances and kid’s activities. Don’t forget…”the kids” will also be performing.

4. Information contact: Adrianne Kaplan - 847-395-8160
Adigirl48@sbcglobal.net

5. We are planning to have an Imperials exhibit table at the picnic - hosted by Christine Craddock. Maybe you’d like to help Crissy on this project as well. E-mail: crssyc@earthlink.net

6. At this time, we have made NO plans for a specific area for our alums to gather. (Last year, both the Vanguard and Cavaliers brought popup tents and gathered near them as groups.) Perhaps we can gather together in the pavilion.

I am getting some replies .. should have a decent gathering. If you can get there by 11:00 am, we can save an area for Imperials in the pavilion (ask for Mouse or Adrianne).

BTW .. based on last years high turnout ... and the probable increase this year ... CARPOOLING would be a good idea (if possible). Parking is a bit limited.

Try to get there early, to establish an Imperials area and help set up some corps displays.

Meet your Imperials friends - those from when you marched and those from other eras!

This will be a crowded event .. so carpooling to get there will be a big help due to limited parking. Bring lawn chairs in case they are needed.

Re: Midwest area corps alumni reunion 2011

Wow! A great event!

Gosh, this was fun. And, if I were younger and in better health, I would have stayed longer. As it was .. we got there about 11:30 am and stayed until 4 PM. Maybe someday we will even stay to the end and attend the "afterglow" party.

Thanks to Adrianne Kaplan and Mouse Fligelman (and their entire team of helpers) for setting this up. A great facility and great activities.

Imperials thanks to Chris Craddock for organizing the Imperials display (with the help of Wayne Mounsey, Roman Blenski and others)! This was the best display we have ever had!

It was great to see so many Imperials there ... people we miss from the past and usually see too infrequently ... here are some I remember:

Bob and Sue Turner
Ruth Borck .. my wife and former corps chaperone (remember
those?)
Wayne Mounsey .. our "Older Sarge" and now, "elder statesman".
Donna Larsen Gatlin .. great helper with the Alumni Directory!
Roman and Sue Blenki
Denny Bialas
Gary Wigman
John Tomaszek
Bill Blomquist
Will Koenig
Russ Norris
Lana Maionchi
Sharan Wagner
Chris Craddock
Brian Pennington- instructor
Paul Wojtena- instructor
Joe Genovese
Mouse Fligelman
Jim Patton
Rich Tessitore
and some new to me: Dennis Kulick (1968-72), George Heinrich,jr. (1978-82 .. who came here from Las Vegas!) and Greg Hitchcock (1973-75 ... who came in from Cumming, Georgia!)!

There may be more that I missed ... glad you were all there! :)

Some people asked me "why don't the Imperials alumni start an alumni corps"? They feel that, with allowing other corps alumni to march (as the RARC did) that would make it a feasible idea.

While that IS true, I always answered that our alumni really aren't that organized and focused to put together such an undertaking. That is .. recruiting, fundraising, instruction, practice commitments, uniforms, performance arrangements, etc. Frankly, the Imperials don't seem to have the "magic" needed ... "signature music", National Championships, etc.

Of course, it WOULD be fun and would be a real blast to actually DO it. :) But, IMHO, this is really just a dream.

Hope you can plan to attend the alumni picnic NEXT year.

Thanks for the addition, Donna - those are some familiar names (it couldn't be an Imperials function without a Gill, could it?). One year I'll make it up there!
