2011 DCI Season

Checked out the DCI website to check out the show held at Leland Stanford Junior University every June. The show features the usual suspects from the West Coast plus Phantom Regiment and the Garfield (or where ever they are from) Cadets. So I probably will go. However, before committing I checked out the various corps' sites to see repitores (before I pay $100 for two tickets, I want to know if at least one corps will be playing something that I will recognize).

Was pleasantly surprised as one corps will be playing Burt Bacharch and Hal David music from the late 60s and 70s. Stuff like "Walk on By," "I Say a Little Prayer," "A House is Not a Home." "Wives and Lover," and "One Less Bell to Answer." These are all popular songs by people like Dionne Warwick, Jack Jones, and the 5th Dimension.

The corps doing this is not a program on the fringes of making the finals, but the Blue Devils. Be interesting if the win with a program of very familar songs (at least for those of us over 50) and make it three in a row. It certainly is refreshing to see this change and I will be going to the show.

Re: 2011 DCI Season

WOW! That will be interesting. I've never really been a Blue Devils fan, while certainly acknowledging their excellence. But it they can win playing recognizable music, then go for it! I wonder how many people in the modern DCI crowd WILL recognize it, though...

Re: 2011 DCI Season

I'd expect a number of those tunes will be recognized by even the younger DCI crowd as they either show up in movies or are used for commericals.

I remember when the Royal Airs played "Rhapsody in Blue" in 1962, someone asked why they were playing music from a United Airlines Commerical

Re: 2011 DCI Season

We got that in 1976 with the Cavaliers. We did a piece called "Chump Change" that sounded a lot like the Sanford and Son theme - but it wasn't!

Re: 2011 DCI Season

The duet that Bill Blomquist and Bruce Borck played in 1966 "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" was based on a jingle from a Hamm's Beer commercial.
