2012 DCI Predictions

Well, just for fun ... I have reviewed the DCI score results at the major shows and checked the improvement rates for the major corps.

Here are my predictions ...(not my preferences)

1. Blue Devils 98.50
2. Carolina 98.0
3. Cadets 97.5
4. Phantom 96.0
5. Santa Clara 94.0
6. Blue Coats 93.0
7. Cavaliers 89.5
8. Boston Crusaders 89.0
9. Madison Scouts 87.5
10.Spirit of Atlanta 86.0
11.Bluer Knights 85.2
12.Blue Stars 85.0

Want to add YOUR predictions or comments?

Best wishes to all the corps!

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

I won't try scores, but I think you've probably got the order correct. The only changes might be with the Cavaliers/Boston/Madison placements, since they have been back and forth all year. It doesn't look like Crown can get it done.

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

Bob, I agree about the Cavaliers/ Boston/ Madison trio ... could change. But it seems that the lipstick is working on the Cavaliers' pig.

Another surprise is Santa Clara ... based on John Anderson's review, I am surprised to see SCV so high.

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

I suspect that Santa Clara is just better than all the rest--when means by my standards the others below them in placement aren't really that good.

If the Blue Devils follow the predictions (and DCIs ranking), this will be their 3rd undefeated season in 4 years.

Still want to see Cavaliers in 9th so they don't compete in DCI's special shows next season.

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

I suspect that John is correct about SCV .. they could just be better than the rest of a mediocre bunch.

I agree about the Cavaliers. Maybe old rivalries die hard.

BTW .. the Blue Devils just might have the best 'dynasty'! While I might not like their field programs, their MUSIC is always good. And, they are one of the few DCI corps which actually has a community youth program in place .. several corps, other youth units.

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

I agree about the Blue Devils "dynasty". While they stil trail both the Cavaliers and Cadets in total victories, theirs have all been since 1976, while the other two stretch back to the 40's (Cadets) and 50's (Cavaliers).

Unfortuantely, that also makes it more boring (unless you're in the Blue Devils)! At least the Cadets had to contend with Vinnie's and Sac once in a while, and the Cavaliers had the Royal Airs, Madison, Belleville, and Norwood on their heels all the time (and the Kilties every four years).

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

Blessed Sacrament ran up more championships than Garfield in the decade between mid-50s and mid-60s (the won 9 out of 13 Nationals they entered). Garfield's national championships were all American Legion titles and a lot of times didn't have much competition as the contests were held in September and the other corps didn't travel. Until the Royal Airs came along the Cavaliers main rival was Blessed Sacrament (although they'd occasionally have problems locally with Belleville and Madison).

I'd say that pre-DCI the corps that won the VFW championship was comparable to today's DCI champion because all the top corps participated. The Cavaliers and Blessed Sacrament were in that category and both won Legion as well as VFW titles (they both tied for the legion title in 1959). Of the corps still around from that era, I'd give the edge to the Cavaliers.

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

John's analysis is good; but the Cavaliers had plenty of competition from Norwood Park (at least until the mid 1960s), Madison, Belleville and the Kilts. Not the 'cakewalk' he pictured.

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

well, my SCORES were pretty close but there were some changes in placings:

1. Phantom overtook Cadets
2. Boston beat Cavaliers
3. Blue Stars failed to make finals.

As most predicted, Blue Devils went undefeated to win again. Either these corps stayed the same for most of the summer, or there was some 'slotting' going on.

Looks like the Cavalier's lipstick had only marginal impact on their pig.

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

From what many have said, it was a mediocre year in general for drum corps. It will be interesting to see what Crown does to finally get over the top; what Cavaliers do to rebound from their low placing; and if Santa Clara can get out of being stuck in the middle. I just wish something would happen to shake things up!

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

Bob, maybe they should go back to being drum corps again.

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

But the Cavaliers always won in the midwest--except when then had Wisconsin judges or went to the Illinois state fair.

Re: 2012 DCI Predictions

Yeah, the State Fair wasn't exactly known for great judging, was it? I think that was the judging equivalent of playing in a New Year's Eve band - you had to do it to keep your union card current! But it was always fun performing on the race track. And you can't beat corn dogs and lemon shake-ups!
