Grant St Party review

4 of us drove from Baton Rouge to cd release party at Grant St Dance Hall last night. Great concert, great cd, can't stop listening to it. Will keep going to Sonny/Goners concerts ever searching for just the right acoustics, though. Nuanced guitar, voice, and even rhythm sounds need more emphasis.

Re: Grant St Party review

Hey Athena, glad you were able to make it to the show. Did he do "World Away"? Were there a lot of people there? How was the mood of the night? Did you take any photos? I'd love to hear more... would love to have been there but being about 2300 miles away makes it hard to just hop in the car and drive over :o(

Take care,
Genny

Re: Grant St Party review

Hey Genny --

Meant to post this over here as well, but I spaced it. Sorry.

They played – and for a change, I know this is the right order, as I managed to score a setlist after the show:

Z Rider
South of I-10
Native Stepson
Promise Land
Wind in Denver
Gemini Blues
Ioana
Blues Attack
Broken Hearted Road
USS Zydecoldsmobile
World Away
All About You
Back to Bayou Teche
Gone Pecan

Encore:
Pedal to the Metal
Congo Square

Yep, “Pedal to the Metal” got shifted to an encore. I squeezed my barstool right up front, so I could watch those incredible hands of Sonny’s, which still manage to amaze me. It took ‘em a while to get going, but after about 3-4 songs, they were cooking with gas, as they say, building to the amazing pinnacle of “Teche” and “Pecan”, followed by the encores. It was treat to hear “Promise Land” live again, and “Teche” always, always puts a stupid grin on my face.

The crowd was great – enthusiastic, without being obnoxiously so. Except for the guy that randomly staggered up the front, tossed some Mardi Gras beads up in Sonny’s general direction – barely missing him, then stumbled back into the crowd. Not quite sure what that was about.

It was a great show. I’m already looking forward to February 19 at the Rock n Bowl. And Jazz Fest, of course.

TF

And, yes, I did get a commemorative Grant Street wine opener.

Thanks for the review travelin' fan! He played "World Away" huh? Wow, nice to see it back in the set list... I'll just hope it's there in April too. Did you take any photos?

Thanks for sharing!

Re: Grant St Party review

Hey, I'm overjoyed Sonny's doing Back to Bayou Teche again! I haven't heard him do that live since he closed in the Blues Tent during Jazzfest 2002. That Feb. 19 date at MCL is getting even more tempting!

I'm going to contact WWOZ and see if they will do a live broadcast of the CD release party on the 19th. If they do it, then all y'all can listen on "da net".
FAT Chance, but worth a try.

Re: Grant St Party review

To Follow up on the OZ idea: apparently Sugar Hill records has to set up stuff like that, but it would make sense if they got with KRVS in Lafayette or WWOZ in New Orleans and set up a live remote of the show.

OR

ONe of us can set up a website and broadcast a SONNY show through a cell phone. Sounds nuts but in this age where imagination is only a few minutes ahead of technical reality, I'm sure one of our more techo-sharp Landreth loonies could come up with something.
