Its 2006 and high time Africa discards retrogressive practices that they still uphold in the name of culture.
Cultural traditions are powerful, and only careful efforts will alter or eliminate harmful ones. Western pressure for change is sometimes heavy handed and insensitive and is rightly perceived as culturally imperialistic. Efforts to change harmful traditions are most effective when they originate within the culture that practices them.
We africans have to look inwardly and start that change.
