SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

Bartlow or Bust

Hi all - a tentative plan for Tuesday's ride.

All being well - I'd planned to do much the same route as last year: out on the Roman Road to Horseheath, drop south to Bartlow and have a quick pub stop. Then back over Hadstock Common to Great Chesterford then onto the Red Lion at Hinxton for the final beer stop before home.

This will mean around 35 miles from Brookside back to town, ideally run off at a fairly fast pace so we get to the Red Lion in time for a couple of beers...

If all isn't well - if the weather is as awful as some of the forecasts are predicting then it might be better to come home via Linton, Abington and Stapleford and have a pub stop nearer to town (Longbow or similar). This route will be a bit shorter too.

People thinking of parking up at the pub and riding in - either keep an eye on the Forum and the weather or park in Stapleford as the route back into town from Hinxton goes via Shelford/Stapleford anyway?

Cheers all

Paul

Re: Bartlow or Bust

Paul,

Thanks for a great ride, certainly a contender for epic of the year!

The numbers for those that are interested:

Cam -> Pub: 27.6 miles
Door -> Door: 54.1 miles
Average: 12.8 mph

That smashed my previous record of 48 miles door to door and the legs do feel a bit tired today.

Cheers,

Jonathon
