SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

Reproofing rain jackets

Hi Peeps is it possible to reproof a rain coat?. what product should I use? only a chap mentioned to me something called nik wax can someone advise me. Cheers Shelton

Re: Reproofing rain jackets

Hi Shelton,

Nikwax make some pretty good products for reproofing the outer laminate layer of waterproof jackets.

One I've used a lot is called TX-10 and you wash your jacket in liquid soap (also sold by Nikwax) and stick the TX-10 in the fabric-softener dispenser of your washing machine.

Let the jacket drip until it's almost dry then finish it off in the tumble-dryer. Bish bash bosh...job's a goodun'.

In fact, just washing your waterproof jacket will improve it's performance - DISCLAIMER - always follow the instructions on the label.

Re: Reproofing rain jackets

When you've re-proofed your jacket, use Granny's Soap Flakes (yes, really) to wash it in future. It's pure soap without all the other stuff that can strip the waterproofing and block up the breathable membrane. It's less expensive than Nikwax tech wash type stuff.

Note: Less expensive, not cheaper!

Re: Reproofing rain jackets

Hi guys,
I use Grangers 30 Deg. It works a treat, and they do a trigger pump thing as well as the wash in one. It helps to spray the high wear areas like the shoulders and the cuffs.
