SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

Development/access stuff

Plans afoot for the gravel pit between Stapleford and Dernford Farm:

Jane will contact the landowner Robert Smith about adding in a bridleway.

And the path from Whittlesford Church to the Sawston bypass is officially 'shared use' now.

But the status of Rowley Lane is still in limbo - the Council have said they can't currently afford to hold a public enquiry as should follow from the fact that four people (not the landowners) still have lodged objections. In the meantime though, it's carry on as before except that work to replace the old farm bridge with a new footbridge and ford is continuing. I gather that the ford will have a small section of bridleway attached to it whatever. I also gather that the Babraham Institute (who are being generally helpful) are willing to talk about opening permissive bridleways through their land - herself will follow this up, of course.
