SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

Access issues - Rowley Lane update

When Jane and the horse mob first made an official application to get Rowley Lane upgraded to a bridleway, they also asked that the footpath that angles off to Sawston be upgraded. The Council's decision was to uphold the claim on Rowley Lane but not the Sawston footpath - hence the appearance of the 'Bikes and horses fuck off' sign at the junction...

The Shelford and District Bridleways Group appealed this decision, via a process which went all the way up to the Secretary of State, who last week decreed that yes indeed, it is from now on, a bridleway. Hooray!

So while most of Rowley Lane itself still remains in limbo, things are going the right way.

The Babraham Institute still sound keen on opening up permissive bridleways through their land too.

See, horses do have their use after all. Who would have thought?

Paul

Thank You Jane and Horsey Mob

FYI Paul D's partner Jane + other horse enthusiasts around Stapleford and Shelford have been working at upgrading the status of some of the paths we use, to permissive paths and bridleways. Their persistent efforts which have been going on for at least 3 years and probably more, have been rewarded with success, which benefit all of us countryside users and south Cambs mountain bike riders.

Thanks Jane and Friends
