SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

Stripped Threads

As I've stripped the threads on my front brake mounts I was wondering if anybody here has installed a helicoil? A quote for new lowers ran about 200 GBP, so I was thinking of giving the helicoil option a go as a kit online runs about 30 GBP.

If anybody is able to give me a hand or let me borrow a drill that would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Stripped Threads

No, but in case you've not already seen this, it looks like it might be useful. Doesn't sound like it's super-easy to do...

Worth watching just for the accent!

Re: Stripped Threads

Cant you tap a larger diameter thread?obviously means a bigger bolt

Re: Stripped Threads

I gave it a good look today and think it's going to be alright. I think the problem was the old lock tight on the bolt that was making it to hard to turn and thus stripping the threads. I've got myself a new bolt and just gone past the damaged threads. Only the first couple were damaged so my bolt has at least 1 cm of good threads holding it in there so I feel pretty good about it.

Dom, I did watch that video earlier, it's what got me thinking it was possible. Of course, I feel any solution that doesn't involve drilling holes in my fork is likely superior.
