SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.
  • Don't ride too close to the person in front. If they crash into a badger, you'll need time to swerve.

First timer

Thinking of coming along on newyears day or Thursday.
Live in St Ives so just wondered is there free parking near where the rides start. (Large Transit van is my mode of transportation.)
I have good lights done night rides through Eppoing Forest etc know light okay but not sure how long they last. I am guessing that 3 hours will enough time for the lights? Hope so. Also what time do you normally finish the rides as got to get home and back up at 04.15 for work.
Look forward to getting a reply and to seeing you out for a ride.

Re: First timer

Hi Sprout,

I think the parking's free after 6 or 7 near the meeting point (it's pay and display) There isn't too much, but you could probably get a transit in there. Some people have also been known to drive to the pub and park, then ride back to the start.

3 hours should be fine; bring a backup for the ride home from the pub if necessary. Rides this time of year are sometimes shorter depending on the level of slog involved. In the pub by 9:30 or 10 these days I would say. Out of the pub by...

Happy New Year!

Michael
