SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

Thursday Night - Train Out - Bike Back

Hi All,

Who is up for a TOBB tomorrow night? I was thinking either of Baldock or Newmarket.

Cambridge to Baldock train times are 18:54 for a 19:17 start or 19:27 for a 19:56 start. The former might be the best match as we get more daylight, but the latter calls at Foxton and Shepreth - 19:36 and 19:39 respectively;

Cambridge to Newmarket train times are 18:47 for a 19:06 start or 19:47 for a 20:08 start. Again, the earlier train might be best.

Both rides would be 30 miles+, I reckon.

Pub stop? I guess we may play that by ear.

Re: Thursday Night - Train Out - Bike Back

Does anyone want foxton or shepreth stations? If not shall we do 18:54 from Cambridge to Baldock?

Re: Thursday Night - Train Out - Bike Back

Re: Thursday Night - Train Out - Bike Back

Sounds good!!!
Shall I toot a route?

Re: Thursday Night - Train Out - Bike Back

32 miles back to town? 1600 ft of climbing...OK?!?

Re: Thursday Night - Train Out - Bike Back

I’m alighting at Cambridge north
See you on the train

Re: Thursday Night - Train Out - Bike Back

Hi Duncan,

I've downloaded one of your routes - it's about 34 miles back and goes via Reed, rather than Therfield. I'll show you when we get to Baldock (or the train).

Re: Thursday Night - Train Out - Bike Back

Epic ride last night. Twisty downhills were good fun. My trace has 7 spikes between 30 and 45 km/h, 2 of which last a few minutes. Great pub too. I logged 57km. Add ride to the station would make it 60.

Thanks to Duncan and Tom for making it happen and navigation.
