SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

Re: New to MTB in the area

Thanks guys. @Tom, I’ll keep you posted. I’m having trouble finding a bike that is within my budget.

Re: New to MTB in the area

Hi Tom,

I have managed to track down and buy a bike. It needed work and think 3 days to remove a stuck seat post. I’ve got it all built but on the test ride, the rear hub was loose so that is tightened which had revealed the need for new pivot bearing.

I honestly had expected this and they ordered weeks ago. However, I do not have a bearing press. I was planning to go to Richardson Cycles in St Ives as they are a dealer for the bike brand so should have access to the technical guides. I was wondering if you have an opinion of the store as they seem to have good reviews? Just that feeling of entrusting someone to doing work on a carbon frame worries me.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Yes Richardsons are a good bike shop. I realise that I'm replying to this after some delay - did you get the service/bearing press that you were looking for?

Tom

Re: New to MTB in the area

Hi Tom, I ended up doing it myself and then the forks needed a rebuild :(

One test ride down! Second this weekend.
