Blaze survives and wins ACW main event

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

By ANDY FLORA - Special to The Frankin News-Post

CROSSROADS -- Scotty Blaze outwitted and outplayed 15 other champions of the squared circle to win the Over the Top Power Rumble, the main event of Saturday night's American Championship Wrestling (ACW) card at the Crossroads Ruritan Club.

The outdoor event, the annual Joe Powers Memorial, was sponsored by We Care of Franklin County and the Crossroads Ruritan Club.

The main event started with two wrestlers, the Legendary Eclipso and Mr. Jamie Wright, entering the ring.

Pins were not allowed and the only way to eliminate your opponent was to throw them over the top rope.

Every two minutes, another wrestler would enter the match until all combatants had entered the ring.

To the surprise of former champion Eclipso, Wright eliminated the "Legendary One" as Wright's many fans in attendance cheered.

One by one, friends and foes eliminated each other until Franklin County's own Hillbilly Helbert and Scotty Blaze were the last men standing.

Helbert threw Blaze into the corner, climbed to the second rope, and delivered rights and lefts to Blaze's head.

Fans believed Hillbilly was on his way to certain victory when out of nowhere, Blaze grabbed Helbert by the boots and pushed him over the top rope to eliminate the country boy and capture the victory.

In other action, the stars of ACW participated in "The Power Rumble."

Teams of three were drawn at random in a winner take all tournament.

This "Russian Roulette" style of determining teams resulted in many unusual pairings.

In the first match of the tournament, the team of Eddie Loco, Scott Weddle, and Foxy Roxy defeated the team of Scott Lee, Robbie Lynn, and Damian James.

Loco and Lynn, the ACW tag team champions, had trouble working without each other.

Lynn decided to help his partner double team Lee when Loco missed Lee with a loaded boot and connected on Lynn's forehead by mistake.

While checking on his downed partner, Loco accidently laid on top of Lynn and the referee counted to three to advance Loco's team to the finals.

In the second match of the tournament, the team of Drake Tungsten, Rolling Thunder, and Helbert defeated Ace England, The Scorpion, and ACW heavyweight champion Sgt. Jim Nelson.

To score the victory, Thunder caught Nelson off guard with a spear and pinned him.

After the match, Thunder pointed out Nelson how easily he was pinned and challenged him to a championship bout at the next ACW event.

In the third match of the tournament, the team of Eclipso, escorted to the ring by Douglas J. Wentworth. III Esq, Ken Steele, and "Big Yella" Jeff Holland squared off against the team of Mr. Jamie Wright, Scotty Blaze, and Col. Spud Wade.

Both teams were disqualified after the action got out of control outside the ring and the referee declared a no contest.

In the finals of the tournament, the team of Tungsten, Thunder, and Helbert defeated Loco, Weddle, and Roxy.

Roxy and Weddle, frustrated at the way Loco was performing for their team, delivered back to back top rope moves to knock Loco unconscious.

Helbert, a spectator in the corner, walked over after the damage on Loco by his own teammates and pinned him for the tournament championship.

ACW returns to action at the Rocky Mount National Guard Armory Saturday, Oct. 4 at 8:15 p.m.

Advanced tickets can be purchased at all usual outlets.
