SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

Cycling the world's most dangerous road

Re: Cycling the world's most dangerous road

I've done it! It's a ROAD, admittedly it's a road in crap condition with a massive drop off one side, but seriously, think how hard it is to cycle down a road that minibuses, etc can drive on?!! I.e. not very. You'd have to make a bit of a massive cock up to fall off the edge!

However, coming back up the road in a minibus in torrential rain with road slides and rocks falling on the top of the bus was one of the scariest things ever, so I have to say I wouldn't do it again just for that reason.

Re: Cycling the world's most dangerous road

Yes, but is it as dangerous as riding Fleam Dyke?

I wouldn't take a minibus along THAT.

Re: Cycling the world's most dangerous dyke

Good point PT - I think the dangers of Fleam Dyke are under rated, and it should be acknowledge as the most dangerous dyke in the world!

Re: Cycling the world's most dangerous dyke

I have scared myself more on Fleam Dyke, yes!
And injured myself more on a flat bridleway near Horningsea.

Re: Cycling the world's most dangerous dyke

Hey Claire

When are you and Ade next coming out to play?

Re: Cycling the world's most dangerous dyke

well isn't that an interesting read, i guess it would not be a good idea for Katie or myself to try that ride given our close race for crash of the year at the christmas party, that is one award that should never be posthumous!
