SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

Demo bikes

Hi

I thought I had posted this earlier, but seems that I hadn't pressed "Post Message". Or maybe someone deleted it because I'm contravening some forum rules, and didn't tell me why.

:-) Here it goes again...

Station Cycles have some nice carbon 29er Specialized bikes available for demo. There is a "hire charge", but they say it's just to cover the cost of servicing the bike afterwards. I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember what that charge is, though.

I took the Epic to Thetford to see whether the big wheels and Brain shock would make the bumpy black run a bit less painful on the legs. I must say it does do that indeed -- that was the first time I actually tried a 29er on a real trail.

So if you want to be tempted to buy new bike number (n+1), go try it out...

Cheers
Riaan
