SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

Right Xmas party is confirmed at the Maypole.

Re: Xmas Party at the Maypole, Tuesday 17th Dec

I have paid the deposit. I need final numbers and food decisions by the Weds before.

Going to talk to the guy tomorrow about whether we should order a starter each or just a bunch of starters to share as it suggests. Anyone any preferences?

Here is the menu

Re: Xmas Party at the Maypole, Tuesday 17th Dec

Hi Claire,

Many thanks for setting this up and paying the deposit.

I've studied the menu and agree the starters seem er, unusual. Thus I would prefer to order my own, but will happily go with the flow if otherwise. Do you want our menu choices emailed to you, or on here?

Re: Xmas Party at the Maypole, Tuesday 17th Dec

Hi Claire I'm very sorry to mess you about . But unfortunately I'm not going to go now. Really sorry

Re: Xmas Party at the Maypole, Tuesday 17th Dec

Hmmm... sharing starters, I'm happy to do that, but not sure everyone will be?

Re: Xmas Party at the Maypole, Tuesday 17th Dec

Superb sounding menu from my favourite Friday afternoon ale establishment !

====================

- I fancy all the starters, so would be up for a big sharing platter

- I'm definitely up for Pork as my main course choice

- Christmas pudding (of course)

============

Finally. Addressing Duncan, and other Comberton/Barton/Kingston/etc. types. Shall we pool our financial resources on the travel front ?

Re: Xmas Party at the Maypole, Tuesday 17th Dec

Right, I need your food orders and final numbers by next Weds 11th.

Sorry for delay in getting organised!

I think we should just choose our own starters as that seems the consensus, though looking at the menu they do sort of sound like nibbles that might be laid out to share mostly rather than having a whole plate to ourselves! But maybe let's choose one each and we can maybe share on the day?

Here's the menu:
Starters:
Pork in a homemade batter served with a plum and ginger dipping sauce
Three cheese Beignets with a plum and ginger dipping sauce
Warm Tarte tatin (homemade red onion and fennel tart)
beer battered haddock (strange starter but who am i to argue!)
stilton mousse on croutons
pigs in blankets
cold cut meat selection

Mains
Roast Turkey with all the trimmings
Road pork with all the trimmings
Salmon with lyonaisse potatoes and green beans
Homemade mushroom gnocchi with a truffle and parmesan sauce

Homemade deserts (sic)

Sahara
Kalahari

Oops sorry I mean

Xmas pud, brandy sauce
Choc beer cake, with custard
Pannetone bread and butter pudding.

For the intolerant among you, let me know what sounds adaptable to you from this that you fancy and I will flag your choices so he makes sure there's no gluten/lactose in. I expect you can choose from the main menu if you like as well http://www.maypolefreehouse.co.uk/Homemade_Italian_Dishes.html

Re: Xmas Party at the Maypole, Tuesday 17th Dec

Hi Claire,

Can you please put me down for:

Three cheese Beignets with a plum and ginger dipping sauce
Salmon with lyonaisse potatoes and green beans
Choc beer cake, with custard

I don't think I can resist the sound of that last one!

Mike

Calling the Comberton Contingent

With reference to Normski's post earlier, I note that the last No 18 bus INTO Cambridge passes through Comberton at approx 18:15, arriving at Drummer Street at approx 18:45. I shall be getting this one.

You might say "What are we going to do in the 45 mins before Maypole?" Maybe we could explore what is left of the King Street Run.

For the return, I have a cunning plan for me and one other, but failing that there is the (pooled) taxi option.

So, are there any takers for the omnibus? Or does anyone have any other ideas?

Kingston rep

Re: Calling the Comberton Contingent

I can recommend the Cambridge Brewhouse if you are heading to king street.
However, relying on Cambridgeshire buses? Are you quite mad?

Re: Calling the Comberton Contingent

Hi Pete.

I'm going to be stuffed at work until later today... So, it looks like i'll be on my bike later on, direct from work.

If we can find a taxi that takes cars, then i'd be up for this after the event !

Norman

Re: Calling the Comberton Contingent

Hi Norman

"If we can find a taxi that takes cars, then i'd be up for this after the event"

Interesting, but I can spot work stress a mile off!

Thanks for letting me know, see you there.

If Claire's prediction re the bus's reliability turns out correct, I'll be biking in..........

Re: Calling the Comberton Contingent

Ah, yes. I meant a taxi that takes bikes !!!!
