SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

new to cambridge

Hello, people!

Googled smth like Cambridge MTB and got this site. Maybe not the best way to deal with my ignorance, but sometimes I just ask people.

So I've moved to Cambridge from Latvia and got my SS MTB here as well just this week. I'm still missing couple of pieces of clothing and some bits for the bike and my question was- where to look for all the second-hand stuff around here? Can you maybe help out with some ad boards or couple of bike service shops where I could buy used/new parts?

As soon as I'm ready, would love to join one of your little excursions. I love night rides and have done a 24-hour MTB race. Bike is fitted with a couple of cheap Cateyes that are OK for roads, but only so-so for trails and stuff. I'm sure you can help somewhat, is that right?

Re: new to cambridge

Hi & wellcome to the world of CAMMTB (sort of thing)!
SS is good.........in fact very good for this time of year, the mud really helps to hone your control of the bike!
What sort of bits are you after?

Re: new to cambridge

Hey, I appreciate the response. At the moment its just bib tights and jacket, but will have to keep an eye out for things like rear mech, casette, shifter because I'm thinking of switching back to geared after more than a year of SS. Depends on the weather, really, and what sort of mud you are getting yourselves into.

Re: new to cambridge

Aldi, the supermarket do a good line in cheep cycle clothes, but it is a bit hit and miss.
shops...Townsend's light blue on Chesterton road, or Ben Haywards on Trumpington Street are a good start, Ben haywards carry quite a lot of clothes in stock.

Re: new to cambridge

Great suggestions, Pat. Just yesterday visited exactly four bike shops, but none had bib-tights available. This morning tried the ones you suggested, with much better results. However, 50 pounds for Altura Night Vision was the best I could see. I'll keep them as an option.

Duncan has a stash!?! Perfect! Any way to get in touch?

Now looking through some bigger forums, the classified section.

Re: new to cambridge

Hiya, try sportpursuit.com - cheap flash sale site.
They have some bib tights for 23 quid atm, not sure if your size, but they are always adding things.

Also if you post up your e-mail I can send you an invite, then I can get some money off, go on, I will buy you a pint the in pub on your first ride :-)

Duncan is the guy above, he will probably be back in a bit to let you know if his emporium has anything in your size!

Re lights, you can get cheap lights for about 20 quid on ebay/amazon that do the job for night riding, at least to start with. These sort of jobbies http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1800-Lumens-CREE-XML-XM-L-T6-LED-Cycle-Bike-Bicycle-Rechargable-Head-Lights-Lamp-/321288956468?pt=UK_SportGoods_CyclAcces_RL&hash=item4ace506a34

Re: new to cambridge

Thank you for the links!
You can send an invite to qdee@inbox.lv, Duncan maybe can get in touch as well..?
Really wanted to go for a test ride tommorow, but don't see how is that going to happen if I don't suddenly get something.

Re: new to cambridge

What are you missing that's essential for a ride? Just lights or other bike bits?
I will send you a sport pursuit invite and duncan's email address.
