SAFETY BRIEFING.

  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

A Case of Mistaken Identity

Picture the scene: a rag-tag bunch of middle-aged scruff bags descend on the Green Man in Grantchester for the second week running...

Mike C: A pint of Doom Bar please.

Barmaid(!): Was it you that came in last week with your face all smashed up?

Mike C: No! I've always looked like this!

Barmaid(!): Oh, I'm so sorry.

This conversation was followed by Mike showing the girl a photo on his phone of Bowes' injuries.

Barmaid(!): Aah, Bless Him! Is he alright?

Mike: Yes, he's fine, but I'm still a bit hurt.

Hilarious.

I'm still not sure if the barmaid said sorry because Mike looked like that or because of the mistaken identity.
Proper funny moment that was.

Yes, I was rather offended when she greeted me with 'Was that you who got your face bashed up last week'! I replied no and anyway lets talk about when your baby is due, must be very soon? But I'm not pregnant she replied.

We'll call it a draw!
