  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.
  • Don't ride too close to the person in front. If they crash into a badger, you'll need time to swerve.

Harlton in the snow

Is Harlton this evening fun or foolhardy?
9pm forecast is 1°C with heavy snow.
I'll have a go if there will be company, please post.

Re: Harlton in the snow

If I am going to make the start line for 19:30 I need to commit now. 7 have viewed the thread and presumably thought "foolhardy" without bothering to write it. The forecast is now 3 hours of rain before the snow starts. I AM NOT RIDING THIS EVENING.

Re: Harlton in the snow

I've just taken a look at the forecast and can confirm that I too have observed the phenomena known as "three hours of heavy rain, turning to heavy sleet at pub-kickingout time" and that I too have thought "F*ck that for a game.."

I am planning to ride home from work, just when the aforemented heavey rain starts and then remain close to the fire for the remainder of the evening.

(that said, Jude's e-bike has a screw right through the rear marathon plus and I need to see whether it's savable - this will invove......going to the shed...gulp...)

Re: Harlton in the snow

Just arrived at The Hairy Hounds.... Is anyone else out for a bit of a laugh in the SNOWWWWWW?
