  • Wear a helmet. Despite recent advances in medical science, brains still cannot be mended nor replaced.
  • Wear gloves or mitts. Hands often hit the ground first. Cuts and grazes invite infection and a hospital visit.
  • Wear eye protection, it only takes a twig or thorn to lose an eye. Crud catchers are a good idea in mucky weather.
  • When downhilling, for your own protection, allow plenty of space behind the rider in front.
  • Bring a bare minimum emergency tool kit and a spare inner tube.
  • Breakdowns are a bore. Plan not to have any by ensuring your bike is in perfect working order.
  • Punctures are also tedious. You can minimise them by fitting latex tubes, slime tubes or running tubeless tyres.

Buying a bike

Hi all,

I inquired last week about coming on some of the rides - however, when I went to get the intended bike from my brother's house it turned out to be completely broken - snapped derailer etc, so I am now looking to invest in a new bike.
I'm hoping to get one in the 300-600 price range, very happy with second hand. I'm looking at some of the ex-rentals that are sold at the thetford forest bikeart shop and are really reasonable, but I'm also open to other options.
If anyone has any advice on buying a bike, where, what and from whom around Cambridge I would appreciate that. I've only ever bought road and commuter bikes before so the specific requirements of mountain bikes are out of my general knowledge.

Re: Buying a bike

Hi Kirsten,
Now is a very good time to be buying a new and better time to buy second hand. Following the Covid/lockdown huge rise in bike sales the manufacturers carried on building bikes at the same rate...the issue is those who wanted a new bike had only just bought bikes and so there is now alot of last years 2022 models left unsold in the shops which is causing them to have too much money tied up in unsold stock and so they are discounting these bikes to increase their cash flow. This makes 2nd hand bikes even cheaper.

What type of a bike are you looking for? Full suspension, Hardtail & what size?
