I attended and graduated P.S. 242 1936-40 and went on to Brooklyn Tech. We lived at 918 104th St, between Flatlands Ave. and Ave. J at the time the only built up area there surrounded on three sides by swamp and marsh. I knew every square inch of the swamps from Fresh Creek to Rockaway Blvd. and from Flatlands Ave to Jamaica Bay.

Canarsie was fun for kids- had the lots to play in from '57 until early 60's when construction took them away. Member of Sebago Canoe Clur 64-67. Enjoyed the yuchy waters of Paerdegat Basin, canoe and kayak racing.
One block from Grabstein's. Was really sorry to see that go. Sorry it's just not the same. Worked in Goody's luncheonette in Bayview for several years too.

Moved to Canarsie from Brighton Beach in Feb '57. Attended PS272 for last half of 1st grade- had Mrs.Hamberger. Finished 2nd grade there with Mrs. Goodman-very sweet teacher. They drew a line down E.99th street and I was transferred to 115 for a year with the old battleaxe Miss O'Driscoll. Then into brand new 279 for 4th to 6th grades. Then on to JHS 211 and then Canarsie H.S.- was in the 2nd graduating class(1968).

Canarsie to me and my children brings back wonderful memories of a community that cares. My three childen all went to Holy family 's school. There was never a cause for concern and safety. I loved going to the Pier during the day and in the evenings. We did not have air conditioning so the Pier was a great place to spend time. people brought tables and played cards-- we communicated. Life was simple and nice. I miss Canarsie and its flavor then. I guess the old saying "Good things don't last" has merit.
